Bad data isn’t created in your warehouse it starts in broken business processes. Here’s why most data quality projects fail and how to fix them for good.

You just spent $200k on a data quality tool. Six months later, your dashboards are still wrong.

I see this story every month:

  • A company invests in a shiny “data observability” platform.

  • Engineers run cleansing scripts every week.

  • Teams sit through endless dashboard reviews.

  • And yet — the CFO still doesn’t trust the numbers.

By then, the tool gets blamed. The engineers get frustrated. And the executive team quietly goes back to using Excel.

The real problem?

You don’t have a data quality problem.

You have a business process problem.

Bad Data Is Born in the Real World

Dashboards don’t break themselves. Pipelines don’t randomly invent errors. Bad data is created upstream, long before it touches your data warehouse.

  • A sales rep rushing to close a deal skips CRM fields.

  • An operations manager “fixes” numbers in a spreadsheet before a board meeting.

The Playbook: How to Actually Fix Your Data

Step 1: Go to the Source

Don’t start with dashboards. Sit with the people entering the data. Watch how sales reps update CRM or how finance prepares reports. You’ll find the root cause of 80% of issues in a single afternoon.

Step 2: Assign Owners and Stewards

Data quality can’t live only in IT. Sales must own sales data. Finance must own financial data. Pair them with data stewards to enforce definitions, monitor lineage, and bridge the gap between business and IT.

Step 3: Change Incentives

Policies don’t fix behavior — incentives do.

Tie part of a sales rep’s commission to CRM completeness. Ban Excel “fixes” in executive meetings. Make data accuracy a KPI, not just an IT aspiration.

Step 4: Profile and Prioritize

Don’t waste time trying to “fix all the data.” Profile key datasets to identify the biggest risks — accuracy, duplication, completeness. Then prioritize by ROI: financial reporting, compliance, and revenue-critical datasets come first.

The Blunt Truth

Your data isn’t wrong because of a warehouse issue. It’s wrong because of messy processes, poor incentives, and no ownership.

No $200k tool can fix that.
